Gabon Information
The country of Gabon is located in West Central Africa on the Atlantic Coast, sharing borders with Equitorial Guinea, Cameroon to the north, Congo to the East and South. It was the location for the 17th season of the television show “Survivor” in 2008. The capitol of Libreville (translated free town), where Christelle lived, is a city of 450,000 people of the approximately 1.5 million in the entire country. Because Gabon is located on the equator, the climate is tropical with 85% of the country covered by rain forests.
A French colony until 1960, there have been two elected presidents. Omar Bongo is the current president, having maintained his office since 1967. The French maintain a small military presence, although the country has been free of wars. Because of its natural resources including oil and wood, the country is one of the most prosperous in the region, with the average income of $14,000 per person per year, about 4 times the income of many sub-sahara African countries.
French is the primary language, with 40 ethnic groups speaking different second languages. Christelle speaks Fang, which is the largest ethnic group. English is rarely spoken. Approximately 60% of the country are Christians, with most of these, including Christelle, being members of the Roman Catholic Church.
